Diego Forlan & Simao - Europa LeagueAtletico Madrid’s current season was heading to a disaster, but their exploits in this year’s Europa League turned it into a very positive one indeed. Diego Forlan was the man who was very influential in both semi-finals against Liverpool. First game which was played at home ended in a 1-0 win for Atletico and it was indeed Forlan who scored in extra-time.

The return leg at Anfield ended 2-1 and Atletico Madrid progressed to final thanks to Forlan’s away goal again. Liverpool were leading 2-0 and were indeed very close to the final themselves. However Forlan scored a vital away goal and secured a place in the Europa League final against Fulham to be held on the 12th of May 2010.

Although Atletico done really badly in the domestic league, they have now managed to reach in 2 cup finals, i.e. the Europa League and even the Copa del Rey. The La Liga is close to end of season and Forlan’s team is closer to the relegation zone than the European league qualification spots. Following the early exit of the highly rated teams of Real Madrid and Barcelona from the European cups, it’s only Atletico which is still carrying the Spanish flag.

Atletico Madrid goes into the Europa League final as favourites, but we’re anticipating a balanced encounter against Fulham!
