On Friday, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Gina McCarthy visited Burlington, Vermont, and made a commitment to Vermonters. McCarthy, appearing with Governor Peter Shumlin, Sen. Patrick Leahy and Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger, has shown her the agency's support to help the city curb pollution runoff into Lake Champlain.

A press conference was held at Saint Albans Bay State Park, a Vermont park. Toxic blue-green algae blooms had filled Saint Albans Bay for weeks this summer.

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a five-year plan to expedite the process of fixing the problems with the Great Lakes. The plan, intended to battle with the biggest threats posed by toxic pollution, invasive species and farm runoff to the Great Lakes, was announced on Wednesday. The plan will also include restoration of more plants and wildlife habitat.
