US EPA Award Grants Aiming at Improvement of Water Quality in Great Lakes

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the award of 14 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) grants of more than $17 million.

The grants aim at funding projects that will improve Great lakes water quality by preventing phosphorus runoff and soil erosion that causes algal blooms.

Great Lakes National Program Manager Susan Hedman said, “These Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) grants will be used for critical projects to prevent soil erosion and reduce phosphorus runoff that contributes to algae growth in the Great Lakes”.

Many of the grants awarded targets Great Lakes watersheds where there have been harmful algal blooms in recent years, said Hedman. Areas affected by algal bloom include Maumee Bay on Lake Erie, Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron and Green Bay on Lake Michigan.

The US Environmental Protection Agency this week awarded $6.5 million grants in Wisconsin to stop algal blooms and control Environmental Protection Agency.

These grants are part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a program aimed at improving water quality in the Great Lakes.

The Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance will receive $4.2 million to pay for conservation practices, such as stream buffering and cover crops on the Lower Fox River watershed. The EPA has awarded more than $17 million in 14 different projects across the Great lakes region.
